44 people slaughtered in Borno village

In yet another reprisal attack by insurgents, some gunmen Tuesday night slaughtered no fewer than 44 people at Dumba village on the outskirts of Baga town, in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of the security Challenge in the North yesterday displayed video recording of Shura members of the Boko Haram sect where they called on their field commanders to ceasefire as being proposed by the government, saying that prophet Mohammed sanctions dialogue during Jihad.
Sources told our reporter yesterday that about 50 gunmen stormed Dumba village which is some kilometers away from Baga and slaughtered 44 people. Many people were also said to have been injured during the attack that lasted for hours.

It was gathered that the gunmen also set fire on some houses in the village.

Nollywood at the mercy of pornography

When Nigerian movie industry otherwise known as Nollywood, kicked off about twenty years ago, themes of witchcraft, ritualism and greed that dominated some of the early movies.

Today, the practice has shifted and lovers of the country’s films are helplessly being compelled to watch obscene movies which promotes immorality and cultures that are alien to us as Africans.

Indeed, recent survey has shown that pornographic movies are increasingly taking over Nollywood. Ardent followers of the recent development in the industry would have noticed the disturbing increase in the degree of nudity portrayed in some of the recent Nollywood flicks.

Regrettably, Nollywood actors have thrown caution to the wind as they now venture into hard core pornographic roles. The internet, ‘YouTube’, is not helping matters as it is one avenue frenquently used by these desperate, and ‘materialistic’ soft-pron producers to gain wide popularity for such obscene movies.

This, however, paved the way for the popularity of Ghollywood movies in the country, as Nigerians, out of curiosity, patronized Ghanaian films just to see how far they were willing to go with this obscenity. But today, the story has changed. Nollywood practitioners who have been very conservative when it comes to displaying sex and nudity on screen, are now leading the way with the production of pornographic movies.

Mysterious priest performs miracle at site of Mercedes crash and vanishes

A mysterious Catholic priest showed up to the site of a car crash in Missouri on Sunday, with witnesses saying he offered a blessing before disappearing just as quickly as he arrived.

But those at the site of the crash, including a number of rescue workers, are now at a loss after realizing no one knows the identity of the mysterious holy man who does not appear in any of the nearly 70 photographs taken at the scene of the accident.

Protest Against Alaafin Turns Bloody In Oyo

A peaceful demonstration turned bloody in Oyo Town, Oyo State, on Tuesday with several people sustaining injuries.

The protesters had gathered and marched through the ancient town to oppose an alleged move by some residents to replace Kamil Akinlabi, a member of the House of Representatives, with Akeem Adeyemi, a son of the Alaafin of Oyo, in 2015.

A group of people were at the palace of the Oyo monarch to lodge a formal complaint about the lawmaker, whom, they accused of not providing the dividend of democracy like his counterparts in the state. They implored the monarch to prevail on his son, Akeem, who is currently the interim Chairman of Atiba Local Government Area, to take over the seat in the coming elections.

Cultists machete female NYSC member in Bayelsa

A 26-year-old National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member serving in Bayelsa State, Miss Folakemi Akinbode, is now struggling for her life at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, following a brutal attack from suspected cultists.

The incident occurred, Monday, at about 8.30pm at Obunagha community in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.

Miss Akinbode, an indigene of Ondo State, a graduate Nurse of the Madonna University serving at NDU Teaching Hospital was returning from work when she was ambushed by two suspected cultists along a lonely bush path leading to the corpers’ lodge where she resides.

ASUU And F.G: A Negative Impact On Nigerian Education

Education is a transformation tool in any given society and

it should be held in high esteem. The future of Nigeria education has

been relegated by various stakeholders (including, F.G and ASUU) in

the sector. It is unfortunate that the government that is vested with

the responsibility of ensuring sustainable development in all

ramification through education claimed to have skiped some allowances

of teachers in higher institutions of learning during the preparation

of it fiscal budget for 2013. A contract or agreement that is duly

signed by parties is deemed to be binding on the parties involved, but

the Nigeria government that should uphold this has failed to implement

such agreement which it entered into with ASUU in 2009, which in turn

leads to a breach and violation of contract.

Revealed: A TOTAL BAN on Prostitution in Abuja

After visiting several locations known to be red-light districts, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) through its secretary for social development, Mrs Blessing Onuh, announced a “total ban” on próstitution throughout the nation’s capital city.

A 48-hour ultimatum was issued for all women of easy virtue to vacate the city and quit the job “because they constitute a nuisance in the city”. She added a fatwa on their male patrons who ruined “some of the girls [who] are under-aged”.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) on Operation Restore Order (ORO) has confirmed the killing of 32 gangs-men after repelling attacks by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on two locations in Borno.

The JTF spokesman, Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa, said this in a statement issued in Maiduguri on Monday.

He said the incidents took place in Bama and Malam Fatori, headquarters of Bama and Abadam Local Government Areas, respectively, last Sunday.

Musa said the terrorists attempted to attack the Mobile Police (MOPOL) base with sophisticated weapons and Improvised Explosive Devises (IEDs).

President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated his Zimbabwean counterpart – President Robert Mugabe – on his victory in last week’s presidential elections as announced by the country’s electoral commission at the weekend.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Dr. Reuben Abati, the President Jonathan said while celebrating their victory at the polls, Mugabe and his party, ZANU-PF, should rededicate themselves to working for the well-being and progress of all Zimbabweans.

The United States told its citizens in Yemen on Tuesday to leave the country immediately due to the threat of “terrorist attacks”, the U.S. State Department said in a statement.

The State Department also said it had ordered non-essential U.S. government staff in Yemen to leave the country.

A criminal investigation is underway into the deaths of two boys who were killed by a python that escaped its enclosure at a pet store in Canada, police said Monday.

Police arrived at the apartment in Campbellton, New Brunswick, at 6:30 a.m. and found the two boys, aged 7 and 5, dead. A friend of the brothers was sleeping in another room and was unharmed, according to Police Const. Julie Rogers-Marsh.

The Anglican Church has threatened to sue a sect of its organisation named, theOrthodox Anglican Church.

The Anglican primate, Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh made this known at a meeting in Abuja, where registrars and legal officers of the church were gathered to deliberate on ways of moving the church forward.

THE Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, on Monday visited Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, without visiting the state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

Abubakar was in the state to inaugurate 100 Prado Sports Utility Vans donated to the nine Niger Delta state Police commands by the Niger Delta Development Commission.

The IGP also did not address officers and men of the command, who waited for several hours to hear from their boss.

The state Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Mr. Joshak Habila, addressed officers and men of the Police. He thanked them for coming out enmasse.

It was at that pointed that security operatives, especially those in their ceremonial uniforms, who had waited to mount a guard of honour, left in disappointment.

Rivers House Leader pleads not guilty to 6-count charge

The Majority Leader of the Rivers House of Assembly, Mr Chidi Lloyd, on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge levelled against him.

Lloyd was arraigned before a Port Harcourt High Court on a six-count charge of attempted murder, conspiracy, wounding, assault, and malicious damage.

The Judge, Justice Latan Nyordee, said the plea of the accused could be taken on the ground that he had been properly arraigned before court.

Nyordee said that the earlier oral announcement of the Attorney-General of the state, Mr Nwogu Boms, taking over the case was premature.

``Now that the accused is properly arraigned, he could take his plea,” he said.

Lloyd pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge preferred against him.

The Attorney-General of Rivers announced his appearance and took over the case.

The victim, who feigned insanity to avoid detection, was nabbed while trying to abduct a nine-year old child.

When interrogated, the suspect, who identified himself as Raimi Wasiu, a native of Osogbo in Osun State, confessed to being a kidnapper alongside seven others and blamed economic hardship for his predicament.

Rivers deport destitutes, beggars to own states – Official

The Rivers Government is to remove beggars and destitute people from streets in the state in a bid to rid the state of beggars, destitute people and lunatics, while some have already been sent to their states of origin.

Stella Toby, Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, made the announcement in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Monday.

She said the beggars, destitute people and mentally-ill people were constituting problems on some major streets and roads in the state.

ASUU Strike: NANS Exco Splits, Disowns President

Some members of the executive told newsmen, yesterday, that students were largely unbiased in the crisis and the inclination of Mr. Gbadebo to support the government was a deviation from the students’ collective goal of resolving the crisis.

China opens arms factory in Nigeria

China has opened one ammunition production line in Nigeria, through the production facilities of DICON, to upgrade indigenous defence industry.

Senior Colonel Kang Honglin disclosed this at a reception to mark the 86th Anniversary of the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army in Abuja.

According to him, most of the PLA peacekeepers are deployed in Africa, adding that China is the biggest troop contributor among the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

Expert says taekwondo is not dangerous for women

GSM subscribers flay porting process

The President, National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), Deolu Ogunbanjo, said on Friday that donor operators were frustrating the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) exercise.

Ogunbanjo said that the donor operators were making it difficult for subscribers to port to other networks.

A donor operator is the mobile service provider that is losing a customer that is porting to another network.

MNP is the ability for mobile telephone subscribers to switch to a new mobile service provider, while retaining their existing mobile numbers.

Ogunbanjo said that the donor service providers were delaying to approve the porting approval requests sent to them, thereby making the porting process take a longer time.

“The Mobile Number Portability is a very good concept; it creates competition and it gives the subscriber a variety of choices,” he said. “So, it is a very good thing that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced it in Nigeria.

Tragedy struck the family of Mr Husseini Mohmud, an engineer with the Niger State ministry of works and Infrastructural development as two of his sons, Musa and Abdullahi died while trying to refill a generator.

The brothers Musa, 19, and Abdullahi, 15, were killed when the generator set they were refuelling caught fire in the back yard of their house located at Bosso, a sub of Minna, the Niger State capital.

It was gathered that the incident occurred during a downpour at night and the deceased did not die immediately but later at the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna where they were rushed to after sustaining serious burns.

Dialogue with Boko Haram leaders remains a challenge – Turaki

The Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki, on Thursday, said that engaging in constructive dialogue with key members of Boko Haram had remained a “major challenge” for the Presidential Committee on Amnesty.

Turaki, who is the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North, made the disclosure in Abuja at a meeting with foreign diplomats in the country.
