Ahmed Sani Yerima: The Profile of Unrepentant Paedophile

Ahmed Sani Yerima, the former Governor of Zamfara State is indeed a man who derives joy in controversy. He has lived most of his active political years pursuing trivial agenda laced with religious sentiments. His hypocritical nature is seen in the way and manner he personalised the issue of Sharia and currently the issue of under-age marriage. His position on these issues has shown that he is a  delusional human being who will always hide under the cover of religion to advance his egocentric agenda.
He has become a sort of demagogue who in trying to justify his divisive decisions must not only misinterpret the Holy Quran but also put logic on its head all in the name of covering up his moral bankruptcy.

ASUU Strike: One Too Many

Once again, the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU, and the Federal Government have reached an impasse as the Federal Government, at least for now, considers the Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, it signed with ASUU in 2009 as being impossible to abide by. While ASUU remains adamant that the agreement remains binding once endorsed by both parties, the Federal Government gripes about the hefty sum that it is now being compelled to pay as backlog of allowances it failed to pay in accordance with the agreement earlier reached by both parties.
At the receiving end of this strike are the students whose fate is left hanging whenever ASUU resorts to indefinite strikes. While it may be justified that government remains the culprit in terms of dodging the implementation of agreements signed with ASUU, the frequent and usually lengthy strike is a means to an end that inflicts its own damage on an already comatose educational sector.

Rooney To Chelsea Almost A Done Deal?

According to reports from a very reliable source, Rooney has already decided he wants to join Chelsea.

The new Mourinho and the media

Jose Mourinho formally introduced himself to the football world and became a huge media figure the moment he raced down that Old Trafford touchline following Costinha’s goal that knocked out Manchester united from the UEFA Champions league in 2004 and when he proclaimed himself to be “the special one” during his first interview after his then club Porto defeated Monaco in the final to lift the cup that was when the media fully realized they are in for a treat with this guy.
What a roller coaster ride it has been, with Jose (as he is fondly called by many) the media always know they’ll get headline material and he very rarely disappoints, an insider friend who works for Chelsea once told me how it’s sometime a jostle to gain entry to a Mourinho press conference due to its impending suspense and drama, interestingly it has always lived up to its billing. His rivalry with then Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson was ignited with that Porto/United Champions league clash in 2004 and it transcended to the English Premier League when he took over helm of affairs from Claudio Ranieri aka “Tinker man” at Chelsea, his first stint at the club were action packed.

Suarez to cost Arsenal over £50m after striker loses contract wrangle

luis_suarez_newArsenal’s pursuit of Luis Suarez, has taken a fresh twist, as the unsettled striker has dropped his intentions to go to arbitration, which means the Gunners have to pay over £50million, to land their man.
Arsene Wenger was understood to have been waiting to see the outcome of the contract dispute, between the 26-year-old and Liverpool, after tabling a bid of around £40,000,001 which was supposed to trigger a release clause. However, in talks between the two parties earlier this week, Suarez has conceded he will not approach the Premier League to clarify it legally, as the contract states it that the Anfield club does not need to sell at any price.

Zimbabweans Face Third Mugabe-Tsvangirai Showdown

Zimbabweans voted on Wednesday in a fiercely contested election pitting President Robert Mugabe against Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, who has vowed to push Africa’s oldest leader into retirement after 33 years in power.
With no reliable opinion polls, it is hard to say whether the 61-year-old Tsvangirai will succeed in his third attempt to unseat the 89-year-old Mugabe, who has run the southern African nation since independence from Britain in 1980.
Both sides are forecasting landslide wins but, in a country with a history of election violence, the bigger question is whether the loser will accept the result of a poll dogged by logistical problems and allegations of vote-rigging.
Polls opened on time at 0500 GMT (1 a.m. ET) across the country, with long queues of people braving a bout of unseasonably cold weather to stand in line from well before dawn.
In one polling station in the western province of Manicaland, a key swing region, the queue stretched for a kilometer (0.6 miles).

Nigeria To Commence Troop Pullout From Mail

Nigeria will begin withdrawing some of its 1,200 troops in Mali on Wednesday and redeploy them in security operations at home, the military said on Tuesday.
Nigeria has been planning the withdrawal mainly due to the need for more soldiers to fight its own homegrown Islamist insurgency.
“The troops are mainly those not accommodated in the structures of the newly formed United Nations … mission in Mail,” Brigadier-General Chris Olukolade said in a statement. “They are to join the ongoing internal security operations.”
He did not specify how many troops would be withdrawn, saying only that an “input of sizable men and materials (will) … continue in the UN Mission,” including a Nigeria-run military hospital.

Ex-Prime Minister Keita Holds Wide Lead In Mali Vote

Former Malian Prime Minister Ibrahim Boubacar Keita holds a comfortable lead and could win an outright first-round victory in the West African nation’s high-stakes presidential election, the minister of territorial administration said on Tuesday.
Keita’s rivals immediately rejected the partial results, calling for the minister, who is in charge of the elections, to resign and an international commission to be established to tally the vote, which they said must go to a second round.
Voters turned out in large numbers across Mali on Sunday, eager for a fresh start after a March 2012 coup allowed separatist and al Qaeda-linked rebels to seize the desert north last year. It took an offensive by thousands of French troops in January to scatter them into the desert and mountains.
Voting was peaceful and observer missions have praised the polls, but tensions were rising as announcement of results neared.

Over 1,800 displaced Bakassi indigenes are currently in the camp.
Our correspondent who visited the camp on Tuesday, learnt that the Cross River State Government had supplied water to the camp twice since March, shortly after the inmates arrived in the school premises, and that essential drugs had only been supplied once.

PORT HARCOURT—The Police authorities have filed a six-count charge of conspiracy and murder against the Majority Leader of Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Chidi Lloyd before a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.
A source at Police headquarters, Abuja, told Vanguard that the Police after a careful and thorough examination of both oral and video evidences as well as the contributions of parties involved, came to the conclusion, adding  “we have done our part, it is now left to the court to assign the case and fix hearing date.”
Similarly, Nobel Laureate,   Professor Wole Soyinka and Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, will join in the civil society protest, slated for Port Harcourt, today, over the crisis rocking the state People’s Democratic Party, PDP, which snowballed into the state House Assembly recently, leading to a free for all. Also, the Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial district, Senator Magnus Abe, has renewed his call for the immediate redeployment of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, over what he described as “his questionable involvement in the Rivers crisis.”
Senator Abe, who is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream, expressed sadness that the police hierarchy had not done anything on the matter even though the National Assembly had passed a resolution asking for Mbu’s redeployment.

Revealed!!! Why A’Ibom SSG, Umana was forced to resign

The Akwa Ibom State Secretary to state government, Mr,Umana Okon Umana has been forced to resign from office, in what appears to be an end of an era. Some men of the Nigeria Police Force who were apparently bent on forestalling any break down of law and order following the wielding of the big stick, were seen on Monday morning guarding the office of the SSG, preventing any form of movement in or out of the office. This came as a confirmation of an earlier report that Governor Godswill Akpabio has asked anyone wishing to contest election against his wish to resign before August this year.

It was earlier reported that Umana who is from Uyo Senatorial District may be defiant to the norms of the Peoples Democratic Party that power should rotate among the different geographical blocks which would makes Eket Senatorial District the rightful choice to produce the next governor for the oil rich state.
Akpabio was said to have urge Umana to forego the idea of contesting, apparently after the wave of criticism that greeted his perceived candidature, and this led to the idea of putting forward his name for the near vacant role of Managing Director of NDDC, which is coming to Akwa Ibom for the first time,
However despite all the options and assurances to him, an obstinate Umana still went ahead to issue two statements in quick succession that he would still contest for the 2015 plum job in the state, adding that even if he became the NDDC MD, he will resign next year to come and grab the Akwa Ibom state Hiltop mansion keys from Akpabio.

This statement was said to have angered Akpabio who accosted him to caution him on his actions, but the two had an outburst that left the Akwa Ibom state number one citizen very angry. It was learnt that Akpabio thereafter warned that if he (Umana) insisted on contesting as governor in 2015, he should resign from his government before August, while Umana response was a threat that should he fail as a result of lack of support from Akpabio, he will rather sink the boat for the two to crashland.

Later at a town hall meeting last weekend with stakeholders of coastal communities in Eket last weekend, Akpabio shocked the man popularly known as the engine room of his government, when he announced that no one had his blessings ahead of the 2015 governorship race.

Akpabio maintained that his intention was to hold town hall meetings with stakeholders in all the 10 federal constituencies of the state, immediately after the September 23, anniversary celebration of the state’s creation.

It is believed that now that Umana has been chased from the state exco  he will now be poised to forcefully wrestle power from Gov Akpabio in 2015.

This is apparently the latest fall out in the exco imbroglio which had seen the seat of govt divided over umana's insistence on becoming the next governor of Akwa Ibom state

Umana's ignoble journey to political golgotha began when he could not secure the support of majority of colleagues in the state exco. He started by sponsoring all forms of attacks on perceived contenders for the position of Governor.

Nigerian History Videos

Nigeria’s First Elections – The Road to Independence

These videos are classics and chronicle Nigeria’s first elections – hotly contested by the Northern People’s Congress, National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, the Action Group and Northern Elements Progressive Union.  There is some wonderful archive footage here and interviews with the Sardauna of Sokoto Ahmadu Bello, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Obafemi Awolowo, Maitama Sule and a young Aminu Kano.

Even though 50+years old, the issues it highlights (cultural and religious differences between north and south) are still relevant today. The things that struck me most:
*The Sardauna’s complete disinterest in federal politics and focus on preserving the customs and integrity of the north. When asked whether he would become Nigeria’s Prime Minister or Governor-General, the Sardauna replied: “I would rather live here amongst my people and carry my traditional title than an imported one.”

Femi Fani-Kayode Replies Senator Ahmed Yerima On His Response to Underage Marriage.

Femi Fani-Kayode yerima‘Nigeria has many uncountable problems and none of them is early marriage. As a matter of fact early marriage the solution to about half of our problems. For those who wonder if I can give my daughter(s) out in marriage at the age of 9 or 13, I tell you most honestly, I can give her out at the age of 6 if I want to and its not your business. This is because I am a Muslim and I follow the example of the best of mankind, Muhammad ﺻَﻠَّﻰ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻪُ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪِ ﻭَﺳَﻠَّﻢَ .
In Islam, marriage is not only about sex, it is about family and helping one another in achieving their goals, which is the attainment of Paradise.
In Islam, a girl can be given out in marriage as early as 6 years old, but consummation of the marriage can only be done when the girl becomes physically mature and she gives her consent to it because unlike English law, it is not permissible for a man to rape his wife in Shari’ah Law.
